PROTEST AGAINST

        WALMART

Our communities and local economies are being bought out by a company that…

- Destroys independent, locally-owned businesses

- Oppresses work unions

- (According to some estimates) receives 92% of its retail products from China, thus hurting the U.S. economy

We need to support local businesses and stimulate growth in our own local markets. We need to keep our money within our communities, not within the pockets of ultra-rich CEO’s. Allowing any company, organization, or group to have this much money and power is an immediate threat to the safety and well-being of our community, our country, and our planet. We must break free from monopoly.

This is not a protest against the well-intentioned general employees of Walmart. This is a protest against the too-powerful CEO’s and corporate heads that are manipulating and using the lower and middle classes.

I was walking along West Main St. one night when I heard sirens off in the distance. The sirens went on and off, but they eventually came closer, and I could see some flashing lights coming towards me. A tow truck came along, going probably 10 or 15 MPH. It wasn’t carrying anything, but had a very large pole or antenna attached to its roof, which was probably the size of a street pole.

As the tow truck made its way up the road, I realized that it was leading a procession of emergency and utility vehicles. They were all going the same speed, all of them with flashing lights. Most of the vehicles were State Troopers or unmarked government-looking cars, but no local police cruisers.

So, I would see a tow truck, then an unmarked government car, then some sort of electrical/power/utility vehicle, and so on, but in the middle of this long line of cars was the weirdest part. In the very middle there was a 16-wheeler truck with a trailer. The trailer was carrying a massive building/room, which looked to be made completely of metal. It was just a big, square metal box, but it was huge. It took up almost the whole width of the road it seemed. It was around the same height as a telephone pole, but probably a bit shorter. It had no windows or doors from what I could see, except for one regular-sized door on the back side of the building. It was just this giant metal room with one tiny (in comparison to its overall size) door.

I assume some of the emergency vehicles were there just to direct oncoming traffic around this truck everywhere they went, because this building took up most of the road and other cars probably had to drive half-way up on the curb to avoid hitting it.

After all these vehicles had driven out of sight, I walked in the same direction they had gone, and I went by a convenience store that I was sure they had passed. A guy and two girls were standing outside of the store talking, so I asked them if they were outside when this weird box had come by. The kid (who works at the convenience store) said he had just stepped outside a moment ago and missed it, but that he knew what I was talking about. Apparently, he had seen the same group of cars (along with the box) go by the store 3 or 4 times in the past few weeks before.

Maybe there is some top-secret government base in Connecticut? Maybe they were transporting some giant creature in that metal box? I don’t know……..

Milk-Crate Basketball Hoop

I was listening to music and noticed he was talking to me, so I took off my headphones.

He asked me what my name was, to which I said “_______(insert my name here)”. He said, “Ahh, ______, like the bible?”. I said, “Huh?”, and he continued with, “_______, like in the bible. You know, ______ from the bible (from which my name is actually derived, but I wasn’t sure why he was mentioning it),”. I probably gave a confused look and just smiled, because his face went blank and he asked, “You don’t read the bible, do you?”, in a retorical manner. I told him I knew the name from the bible, but that no, I don’t read it.

He changed the subject and now asked if I would mind taking a walk with him. I said, “No thanks, I’m fine.” He asked me again to go walk with him for a bit. Again, I answered, “Sorry, but I’m good. Thanks”, while politely smiling at him. I slowly began to walk forward. He started asking more intently and seemed to get angry as I began walking away.

He started loudly saying, “Sir…… Excuse me….. Sir…..”. I keep walking, and now he’s yelling very angrily, “Sir!… Sir!… Sir!”. I noticed through the reflection of a store window that he was following me. I was half-laughing at the situation and half-walking away even faster, hoping not to get jumped.

But he eventually stopped following me. He muttered, “Motherfucker…….”, and walked off in the other direction.

Thomaston Avenue

I took off my soaked shirt and rode off in the other direction. The same car found me again 10 minutes later and got me again. I pedaled really fast and almost caught up with them, but stopped and realized they’d probably just shoot at me again if I came up to them.

Cedar Crest Mental Asylum

I had been applying to jobs in the area and noticed an odd-shaped building without any signs advertising what it was. Wondering if perhaps it was a business I could apply to, I asked a woman walking by if she knew what the building was. She told me didn’t know, and then we somehow transitioned into conversing about applying to jobs. She started to get a bit worked up and told me about how she thought she was going to get fired from her job. She said she needed the job to support her sick/elderly mother. It eventually unfolded into a rant about all the problems in her life. She was an average-looking, middle-aged woman; there was nothing that seemed strange or peculiar just from passing her by on the sidewalk. I think everybody can get to a point where they just really need to explain all of their problems to someone, even if that person’s a complete stranger.

The woman talked about how she was divorced and how she had a son who hasn’t spoken to her in 7 or 9 (I can’t remember which number) years. She said something along the lines of “…he has children, too and I think one day I’m going to meet them. I want to meet my grandchildren,”. I didn’t say a lot, partly because she was talking so much and I figured I’d just let her. She probably just really needed to get it off of her chest and have someone listen. But when I got the oppurtunity to butt in, I asked what things made her happy. Her answer was, “being on a boat with the man of my dreams, while maybe reading a good book, but I know, that’s too much to ask for”. I said (in a polite way) that that is something that might take years to happen, if ever, and that she should try to think of something that she can do today, right now, to give her some happiness.

So, she started talking about some Brad Pitt book that she really wanted to read, and then started talking about Brad Pitt and how Jennifer Aniston or Angelina Jolie was an idiot for leaving him (I don’t actually know if any of that is true, I don’t pay attention to any of that tabloid shit). She also told me how she got kicked out of her old apartment by Orthodox Jews. She mentioned specifically that the landlords were Jews, to which I asked what the problem with that was. She said that she loved Jews but that Orthodox Jews (apparently) control all the money in the world and were bad. I considered asking her why she thought that and telling her that it’s unfair to generalize people and make assumptions about religious sects in that way… but then I just realized that I didn’t care enough to argue about it at the moment, and just sighed and smiled to myself. I get tired of arguing shit like that.

Regardless of this woman’s potentially anti-semitic (but only those damn Orthodox ones!) sentiment, she was still a living being who seemed to have problems and emotional pains, just like me. And despite her potentially flawed logic (in my opinion), I listened to her problems. At one point during this whole thing, she started crying. I will often keep a negative perception of someone for a long time just from hearing them make even one ignorant (again, in my opinion) comment like this woman had made. And, while part of me still dislikes her for what she said, I listened anyway and tried to give her some advice. Anyway, I told her I had to go, but that she should go off right now and try to do something that would make her happy; to not think about her problems and just focus on finding something that would give her joy just for that day, despite if she got fired the next day and despite whatever else may happen in the future.

She mentioned again her wish of finding the man of her dreams, as I was about to leave. I told her, “Tomorrow has no limits”, and regardless of how cliche, dramatic, and dumb that sounds, I believe it in a certain sense. She said, “I hope so”. I told her to take care and I left.

Hi, Connecticut.

I am from Connecticut.
